In an echo of the gang rape and murder of a 23-year-old student on a New Delhi bus in December, the Cape Town-based Cape Argus newspaper said the victim was sliced open from her stomach to her genitals. She was dumped on a building site in the town of Bredasdorp, 130 km (80 miles) east of Cape Town. The Indian case triggered protests against endemic anti-female violence. But the Bredasdorp murder is unlikely to provoke a similar outpouring of anger in South Africa, where women's groups say rape has lost the power to shock. Wed, 06 Feb 2013 04:52:04 GMT Iron rod thrust into teenager's mouth during rape bid New Delhi , Feb 5 (IANS) A teenaged Class 9 student fought off a rape bid in her own house here by an electricity contractor who thrust an iron rod into her throat to quell her cries for help, police said Tuesday. The accused has been arrested. The victim, 19, who was attacked around 8.30 p.m. Monday in south Delhi's Lajpat Nagar , underwent a surgery in throat in the morning and is said to be in a critical condition, police said Anil Kumar, an electricity distribution contractor, tried to rape the victim finding her alone at her house. "Kumar went to the victim's home to collect monthly dues of the electricity. Finding her alone, he tried to rape her.
